Christmas Motif
 

Holiday Motif - can be worked in 3 colors of your choice, to suit any holiday - sample shown in Christmas colors: green (color A), red (color B), cream (color C)
 


Materials:  Worsted weight yarn in 3 colors - each motif takes approx. 10 yds.

                Colors A & B, 20 yds. Color C ; size H hook (or size to achieve gauge)
Gauge:      Motif measures 9" from point to point, approx. 4-1/2" along each side
 
Stitches used:  chain (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), long single crochet (long sc): To work long sc, insert hook in top of dc 3 rows below, pull up loop loosely to height of current row (to avoid puckering fabric), yo and complete single crochet.


Motif:

Rnd 1: With Color A, ch 4, join into ring (or use disappearing beginning loop method), work 12 dc in ring, join with sl st, fasten off Color A (12 dc).

Rnd 2: Join Color B to top of any dc, ch 3, work dc in same st, 2 dc in next dc, 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (24 dc).
Rnd 3: Ch 3, work dc in same st, *ch 2, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * around, ending ch 2, join with sl st to beg ch-3, fasten off Color B (12 2-dc groups, 12 ch-2 spaces).
Rnd 4: Join Color A in top of second dc of any 2-dc group, ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next sp, *sc in ea of next 2 dc, 2 sc in next sp, rep from * around ending sc in remaining dc,  join with sl st (48 sc).
Rnd 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, sc in ea of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st, fasten off Color A (60 sc).
Rnd 6: Join Color C in first of the 2 sc that began round 5, ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, sc in next 3 sc, long sc loosely (see note above) into top of dc 3 rounds below, long sc in top of next dc 3 rounds below, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc (at point), sc in next 3 sc, long sc in next dc 3 rounds below, long sc in next dc 3 rounds below, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc (at point), rep from * around, join with sl st (84 sc).
Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in same st, (ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in ea of next 2 sc) 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next sc, ch 2, *2 dc in next sc, (ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in ea of next 2 sc) 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next sc, ch 2, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (30 2-dc groups, 6 ch-2 sps, 24 ch-1 sps).
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in ea sc and ea sp around, working 2 sc in ea ch-2 sp and 1 sc in ea ch-1 space, join with sl st, fasten off (96 sc).
Finishing: Block motifs if necessary to lay flat. Use singly as decorative table mats, or join as desired to form scarves, runners, lapghans or afghans by whipstitching or slip stitching motifs together through back loops sides of hexagons.  After all joining is complete, work 1 round single crochet around entire piece.
