HODGEPODGE BABY HAT & BOOTIES Skill level: Easy+ Size: 6-12 mos.Hat measures approx. 16" circ. and 6" h. Booties measure approx. 3" at sole Materials :150 yds. sport-weight baby yarn in main color (MC) (white) 50 yds. sport-weight baby yarn in contrast color (CC) (lavender) (Samples shown in Bernat “Baby Softee”. Note: Blanket pattern shown in background of photo can be found in the free pattern section of the Lion Brand Yarns website – Lion Brand Jamie Baby Set.) Alternatively, set can be worked in a single color (MC) throughout. Size G & F hooks – OR size to achieve gauge Tapestry needle for weaving in ends Optional: 1 yd. ¼” satin ribbon for ties. Gauge : 4 dc = 1” with sport-wt. yarn on size G hookTerms/Abbreviations : beginning (beg), chain (ch), decrease (dec), doublecrochet (dc), each (ea), hook (hk), increase (inc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st), together (tog) Special stitches :Shell: Work (2 dc, ch 2, sc) all in same stitch or space. Pattern notes: Rounds 1-3 of hat are worked without turning at end of each round. Rounds 4-15 are worked with turns at end of each round. Directions are for 2-color version using CC & MC. For 1-color version, use MC throughout. Hat Rnd 1: With larger hook and CC, ch 4, join into ring (or use disappearing loop beginning method: wind yarn around forefinger once, insert hook into loop, yo, pull loop through ring), ch 3, work 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, do not turn (12 dc)Rnd 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, do not turn (24 dc)Rnd 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, 1 dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn(36 dc). Fasten off CC, join MC. Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, ch 2, sc in same st (beg shell completed), *skip 1 dc, in next dc work (2 dc, ch 2, sc)(shell completed), rep from * around, join with sl st to beg ch-2 space, turn (18 shells)Rnd 5: Ch 1, sl st in ch-2 sp of first shell, ch 2, 1 dc in same sp, ch 2, sc in same space (beg shell completed), *in ch-2 sp of next shell work (2 dc, ch 2, sc)(shell completed), rep from * around, join with sl st in ch-2 sp of beg shell, turn (18shells) Rnds 6-12: Rep Rnd 5. Edging rounds (Note: work Rnds 13-15 loosely or on a one-size-larger hook to prevent tightness around edge): Rnd 13: Ch 1, 3 sc across top of each shell (i.e., sc in ch-2 sp & 2 dc in each shell), ending last rep with sc in ch-2 sp of last shell, sc in first dc of last shell, skip last dc, join with sl st to first sc (53 sc). Fasten off MC, join CC, turn.Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st, turn (53 sc)Rnd 15 (picot round): Ch 1, sl st in first 2 sc, for picot (ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook), *sl st in next 2 sc, picot, rep from * around, join with sl st and fasten off (27 picots). Bootie (make 2) Row 1: With size G hook and MC, ch 28, dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across, turn (26 dc).Row 2: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st at base of turning ch-2, ch 2, sc in same st, *skip 2 dc, in next dc work (2 dc, ch 2, sc)(shell completed), rep from * across (ignore turning ch at end of row, turn (9 shells)Row 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in ch-2 sp of first shell, ch 2, sc in same sp (shell completed), *in next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, sc), rep from * across, turn (9 shells)Row 4: Ch 1, sl st across ea sp and ea dc of first two shells (i.e., 6 sts), sl st in ch-2 sp of third shell, ch 2, dc in same sp, ch 2, sc in same sp (beg shell completed), *in next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, sc)(shell completed), rep from * 3 more times, leave rest of row unworked, turn (5 shells)Row 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in ch-2 sp of first shell, ch 2, sc in same sp (beg shell completed), *in next ch-2 sp work (2 dc, ch 2, sc)(shell completed), rep from * across, turn (5 shells)Edging (Note: work Rows 6-8 loosely or on a one-size-larger hook to avoid tightness at top of cuff): Row 6: Ch 1, 3 sc across top of ea shell (i.e., sc in ch-2 sp and 2 dc of ea shell), (15 sc). Fasten off MC, join CC, turn.Row 7: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn (15 sc)Row 8: Ch 1, sl st in first 2 sc, for picot (ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook), *sl st in next 2 sc, picot, rep from * across, ending with sl st in last sc (7 picots). Fasten off. With right sides tog, fold bootie in half and whipstitch seam down front of cuff, foot, and sole. Turn bootie right-side out. Ties (make 2): With smaller hook and contrast color, ch 85. Fasten off. Weave ties through spaces between Rows 3 and 4. Knot ends of chain and trim. Tie into bow. Alternatively, use ¼” ribbon for ties.
