Chunky Stripe Child's Hat

Size: 22" around & approx. 6-1/2" high

Size J hook.

Leftover yarn from scarf - 1 skein ea of Lion Brand Chunky USA in same colors as scarf.

Sample hat colors: Color A - dk. green; Color B - yellow; Color C - red. 

There are many great pieces of children's clothing that would match this wonderful winter hat. In winter, kids love to go on trips and you can find great children's luggage to bring along.  Don't forget the portable dvd players to keep them occupied during travel!

Foundation round:

With Color A and size J hook, either ch 4, join in a ring, ch 3, make 11 dc in ring - OR - just make a loop around finger, insert hook into loop and catch yarn through, ch 3 and make 11 more dc in ring, pulling yarn so loop closes without a hole. Sl st to first ch 3, pulling Color B through. Drop Color A but do not cut it (carry loosely at joining until needed again 2 rounds later) (12 dc)

Rnd 1: with Color B, ch 1, turn. Work 2 sc in ea dc around. Join with sl st in first sc, dropping Color B and picking up Color C. (24 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 2: with Color C, working in BLO on this round, work 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * around, join with sl st to first st (36 sc). Drop and cut Colors B and C, leaving 6" tail for weaving in. Pick up Color A, ch 3.

Rnd 3: Working in BLO on this round, work 2 dc in first sc, 1 dc in each of next 2 sc, *2 dc in next sc, 1 dc in ea of next 2 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (48 dc). Ch 3, do not turn.

Rnds 4-8: Continuing with Color A, ch 3 and work 5 more dc rounds even, joining with sl st and starting ea new round with ch 3 (48 dc)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, turn. Working in BLO, work sc in ea dc around, join with sl st. Attach Color B, ch 1, do not turn.

Rnd 10: Working in BLO, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st. Attach Color C, ch 1, do not turn.

Rnd 11: Working in BLO, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st, pulling Color B through. Ch 1, do not turn.

Rnd 12: Working in BLO, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st, pulling Color A through. Ch 1, do not turn.

Rnd 13: Working in BOTH loops, sc in ea sc around. Join and fasten off. Cut all colors, leaving 6" tails, and weave in ends.
