FOOTBALL TEAM COLORS  12" SQUARE

Designed by Kathy N.  ©2002

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn - 1 skein navy blue, white, and orange

(NOTE: I used what I had available which was Red Heart Soft in navy and white and Red Heart SuperSaver in orange. I would recommend using one type of yarn for all three colors so you don't get size variations between rows like I did (the SuperSaver is thicker than the Soft)

Size H hook or size needed for gauge

NOTE: Finished square should measure about 12" using these yarns. If you find yours is getting too big by Round 12, you can take out a couple of the navy blue rounds (Rnds 13-16) before you work the orange long sc round (Rnd 18). Or skip the long sc round and work one final round of plain orange sc. Or do your own thing to make it come out to 12"!

Rnd 1: With orange, ch 4, join into a ring. Chain 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring, ch2, 3 dc in ring, ch2, 3 dc in ring, ch 2, join (you should have a square with four 3-dc groups like the first round of a basic granny square). Cut orange.

Rnd 2: Join white into center dc of one of the 3-dc groups, ch 1, sc to corner, work 3 sc in corner, sc across to next corner, work 3 sc in corner, repeat around and join to first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, 1 hdc in ea sc to corner, in corner work 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc. Work hdc across to next corner, work 2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc in corner, hdc to next corner, repeat around. Join with sl st to first hdc.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 1 hdc in ea hdc to corner, in corner work 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc, hdc in each hdc to next corner, work corner, repeat around. Join to first hdc with sl st. Cut white.

Rnd 5: Join navy blue, ch 1, sc in ea hdc across to corner, in corner work 3 sc, sc across to next corner, work 3 sc in corner, repeat round. Join to first sc with sl st.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc to corner, work 3 sc in corner, sc around working 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st. Cut navy.

Rnd 7: Join white, ch 2, hdc in ea sc around, working 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in ea corner. Join with sl st to first hdc.

Rnd 8: Ch 2, hdc in ea hdc around, working 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in each corner. Join with sl st. Drop white but do not cut it.

Rnd 9: Attach orange, ch 1, work sc in ea hdc around, working 3 sc in ea corner. Join by dropping orange as you sl st and pull white through from previous round. Cut orange.

Rnd 10: WORKING IN BLO on this round, with white, sc around working 3 sc in each corner. Join.

Rnds 11 & 12: Working in both loops again, ch 2, hdc around working 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in ea corner. Join. Cut white.

Rnds 13-16: Attach navy and sc in ea hdc around, working 3 sc in ea corner. Join. Cut navy.

Rnd 17: Join orange. Work one long sc in st 2 rows below (keeping tension loose so it doesn't bunch up), work 3 sc, work 1 long sc, work 3 sc, 1 long sc across to corner, working 1 or 2 sc before and after corner and 3 sc in corner so long sc are spaced fairly evenly (try to end up with 10 long sc on each side with plain sc in each corner --- you can fudge a bit to get the long sc spaced evenly). Join.

Rnd 18: Work 1 row of sc in each sc and long sc around. Join and finish off. Rnd 18: Work 1 row of sc in each sc and long sc around. Join and finish off.

Block square, as needed.
