Fingerless mitts with a cabled look--without a cable needle!

Skill level:  Easy-Intermediate

Size: Teen/Adult - mitts measure approx. 7.5" long & stretch to fit around average adult hand

Materials:

150 yds. worsted weight yarn (sample shown in Lion Brand Yarns “Vanna’s Choice”)

Set of 4 or 5 size 8 (5.0 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns)

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:  10 sts  & 11 rows = 2” in K2, P2 rib pattern (slightly stretched) on size 8 (5.0 mm) needles

Terms/Abbreviations:  beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), continue (cont), decrease (dec), each (ea), increase (inc), knit (k), pattern (patt), place marker (pm), purl (p), slip (sl), stockinette stitch (st st)

Pattern notes: Mitts are worked in the round in circular knitting technique, except for thumb opening which is worked back and forth in rows.

Special stitches:

Twist stitch:  Skip first stitch on left needle. Knit into second stitch on left needle but do not remove it from needle. Knit first stitch on left needle (the skipped stitch) and move both stitches off left and on to right needle.

 

Mitt (make 2)

With size 8 dpn, cast on 32 sts, join for working in rounds, being careful that stitches are not twisted. Place marker to note beg of rnds.

Rnds 1-6: *K2, p2, rep from * around.

Rnd 7: *Twist st over next 2 sts, p2, rep from * around.

Rnds 8-21: Rep Rnds 1-7 twice.

Rnds 22-23: *K2, p2, rep from * around.

Thumb opening (worked back & forth in rows on 32 sts):

Row 24: *K2, p2, rep from * around, ending last rep p1. Place rem purl st on left needle and turn work.

Row 25: K1, *p2, k2, rep from * across, end last rep k1, turn.

Row 26: P1, *k2, p2, rep from * across, end last rep p1, turn.

Row 27: K1, *p2, k2, rep from * across, end last rep k1, turn.

Resume working in rounds

Rnd 28: P1, *twist st over next 2 sts, p2, rep from * around, ending last rep p1.

P 1 st to join up for working in rnds again.  Replace marker to note beg of rnds.  Rounds start again with K2.

Rnds 29-35: Rep Rnds 1-7.

Rnds 36-41: *K2, p2, rep from * around.

Bind off loosely in pattern and weave in all tails.

Make second mitt.
