Designed by Kathy North; (c) 2005; distributed by piece-by-piece.net Size: Approx. 2-1/2"-3" longMaterials: Few yards size 3 or 5 cotton perle thread in red, white, and navy blue Metal pin back or safety pin Needles: Set of four size 2 (US) dpns - 5" length makes it easier to handle Instructions: With red, CO 16 sts. Join and work K1 P1 rib for 4 rounds. Join navy blue. Cut red. Knit 4 rounds with navy. Join white. *K3 navy, K1 white, rep from * around. Knit 1 round with navy. *K1 navy, K1 white, K2 navy, rep from * around Knit 1 round with navy. *K3 navy, K1 white, rep from * around. Cut white. Knit 2 rounds with navy. Place 8 sts on one needle for heel flap. Join red and knit a heel flap thus: Slip 1, knit 7, turn. Slip 1, purl 7, turn. Slip 1, knit 7, turn. Slip 1, purl 7, turn. Slip 1, knit 7, turn. Turn heel: Slip 1, P3, P2tog, P1, turn. Slip 1, K1, K2tog, K1, turn. Slip 1, P1, P2tog, P1, turn.Slip 1, K1, K2tog, K1 (you should have 4 sts at end ofheel turning) Cut red. With navy, knit across sts of heel flap, then pick up 3 along side of heel flap.With empty needle knit across 8 "instep" stitches.With 3rd needle, pick up 3 sts along other side of heel flap and knit to center of heel flap. Gusset: K to last 3 sts on ndl1, K2tog, K1. K across sts on ndl 2. K1, SSK, knit across on ndl 3. Knit 1 round plain. Decrease on next round to arrive at original count of 16 sts (fudge a little if you need to) Continuing with navy, knit around on 16 sts for 3 rounds. Join white. Knit 2 rounds white, knit 2 rounds navy, knit 2 rounds white, knit 3 rounds navy. Join red. Cut navy and white. Toe: Knit one round red. On next round, work to last 3 sts on ndl1, K2tog, K1. On ndl 2, K1, SSK, work across to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1. On ndl 3, SSK, knit to center of heel. Work 1 or 2 rounds even. Gather sts together and finish off. Fasten in all yam ends on inside of sock.
