Skill level: Easy+ - Intermediate
Sizes: 2-scallop version (approx. 8.5” circumference unstretched)
3-scallop version (approx. 12” circumference unstretched)
4-scallop version (approx. 15” circumference unstretched)
Note: Hats will stretch to fit up to 3” larger than unstretched measurements.
Materials:
Soft worsted or DK wt. yarn (samples shown in Caron “Simply Soft”, TLC “Baby Amore”, Red Heart “Designer Sport”, Peaches & Crème Ombres)
Size 8 (5 mm) circular needle (16” length)
Set of 4 (or 5) size 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpn)
Tapestry needle
Gauge: 4.5 sts = 1” in stockinette stitch on size 8 (5 mm) circular needle
Stitch multiple = 18
Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), pattern (patt), repeat (rep), round (rnd), stitch (st), together (tog), yarn over (yo)
Pattern notes: Pattern is written for largest size (4-scallop version).

Hat
4-scallop version:
Cast on 72 sts, join for circular knitting, being careful that sts are not twisted on needle. Place marker to note beg of rnds.
Rnds 1-6: Knit.
Rnd 7 (begin lace patt): *(K2tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 6 times, (K2tog) 3 times, rep from * around.
Rnd 8-10: Knit.
Rep Rnds 7-10 until hat measures 5” from beg, ending with a plain knit round.
Begin crown decreases (Note: switch to dpn when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle)
Rnd 1 (dec): *K7, K2tog, rep from * around (64 sts)
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3 (dec): *K6, K2tog, rep from * around (56 sts)
Rnd 4: Knit.
Rnd 5 (dec): *K5, K2tog, rep from * around (48 sts)
Rnd 6: Knit.
Rnd 7 (dec): *K4, K2tog, rep from * around (40 sts)
Rnd 8: Knit.
Rnd 9 (dec): *K3, K2tog, rep from * around (32 sts)
Rnd 10 (dec): *K2, K2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)
Rnd 11 (dec): *K1, K2tog, rep from * around (16 sts)
Rnd 12 (dec): *K2tog, rep from * around (8 sts)
Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail. Gather sts tog and cinch to close. Weave in tails.
Options:
2-scallop version (shown in Pisgah Yarn & Dyeing Co., Inc. Peaches & Crème Art. 930H Ombres)
Follow 4-scallop version as written with these revisions:
Cast on 36 onto a set of size 8 (5 mm) double pointed needles (dpns).
K2 rnds.
Rep Rnds 7-10 three times.
Decrease for top, beginning at K4, k2tog instruction.
Follow decreases until 6 sts remain. Gather sts & finish off.
For 3-scallop version (shown in TLC “Baby Amore” and Red Heart “Designer Sport”)
Follow 4-scallop version as written with these revisions:
Cast on 54 sts onto circular needle.
Work Rnds 1-3, then skip to Rnd 7 and continue with pattern.
Work lace pattern rounds until piece measures 3.5” to 4” from beginning.
Work crown decreases as written. Stitch counts after decrease rows will be:
48, 42, 36, 30, 24, 18, 12, 6 (i.e., 6 sts less on each decrease round)
