Skill level: Easy

Size: 6 to 12 mos.

Materials:

100 yds. cotton sport wt. yarn in lt. blue (sample used Bernat “Cotton Tots”)

50 yds. fluffy novelty soft yarn in white (sample used Lion Brand “Homespun”)

Size 6 circular needle, 16” length – or size to achieve gauge

Size 6 set of 4 (or 5) double-pointed needles

Tapestry needle

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), purl (p), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), round (rnd), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)

Gauge: 18 sts & 20 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 6 circular ndl

For Fair Isle-look version, substitute a variegated yarn for the blue and a solid color for the white. Be sure to strand yarns in colorblock rounds LOOSELY!
For a smaller cap (shown in photo), cast on 60 sts and follow pattern as written to top decreases. Begin decreases with *K8, K2 tog, rep from * around, then continue with decreases as written.

Hat

With circular needle & blue yarn, CO 72 sts, join to begin circular knitting (being careful that sts are not twisted on needle before joining.) Place marker to note beg of rnds.

Lower ribbing:

Rnds 1-6: *K2, P2, rep from * around.

Rnds 7-9: K.

Rnd 10: K3 with blue, join white, K3 with white, *K3 with blue, K3 with white, rep from * around.

Rnds 11-12: *K3 with blue, K3 with white, rep from * around.

Rnds 13-15: K around with blue.

Rnds 16-18: *K3 with white, K3 with blue, rep from * around.

Rnds 19-21: Rep Rnds 15-17.

Rnds 22-23: Rep Rnds 13-14.

Rnd 24: *K3 with blue, K3 with white, rep from * around. At end of rnd, cut white, leaving 6” tail for weaving in later.

Continue rest of hat with blue only.

Begin decrease rnds (Note: change to dpn when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle):

Rnd 1: *K7, K2tog, rep from * around (64 sts)

Rnd 2: K.

Rnd 3: *K6, K2tog, rep from * around (56 sts)

Rnd 4: K.

Rnd 5: *K5, K2tog, rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 6: K.

Rnd 7: *K4, K2tog, rep from * around (40 sts)

Rnd 8: *K3, K2 tog, rep from * around (32 sts)

Rnd 9: *K2, K2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 10: *K1, K2tog, rep from * around (16 sts)

Rnd 11: *K2tog, rep from * around (8 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail, gather rem sts tog and pull gently to close.

Finishing

With white, make pompom and sew to top of hat.
