Materials:

Pisgah Yarn & Dyeing Co., Inc Article 930H Peaches & CrèmeTM

100% cotton

worsted wt. (56.7 g. (2 oz.) balls, 122 yds./ball):

1 ball blue

1 yd. dark red

1 yd. purple

1 yd. white

Size G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Small amount of fiberfill stuffing

Gauge: 4 sts & 3.5 rows = 1” in single crochet on size G/6 (4.0 mm) hook

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), decrease (dec), double crochet (dc), half

double crochet (hdc), increase (inc), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), single crochet

(sc), single crochet two together (sc2tog), skip (sk), slip (sl), stitch (st), together

(tog), triple crochet (trc)

Pattern notes: Whale is worked in two identical front and back pieces, then joined

together with single crochet, with fiberfill stuffing and embroidered features

added.

Whale Body (make 2)

Row 1 (RS): Ch 17, sc in 2nd ch from hk & ea ch across, turn (16 sc)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in 9 sc, sl st in next 4 sc, hdc in next 3 sc, turn (9 sc, 3 hdc)

Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in same st at base of beg ch, hdc in next 2 sts, sl st in next 4

sts, sc in next 9 sts, turn (4 hdc, 9 sc)

Head shaping:

Row 7 (dec row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog, turn (7 sts)

Row 8 (dec row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, turn (5 sts)

Row 9 (dec row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog (3 sts). Fasten off.

Make second piece the same.

Assembly:

Holding wrong side of first piece tog with right side of second piece so head and

tail shaping matches, attach yarn through center sts at bottom of body. Ch 1, sc

through both thicknesses in ea st around until reaching last 2 sts at top of tail

end.

For tail, work 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, sl st down side of dc just worked,

then cont in sc along tail end of body. Before continuing, stuff with fiberfill, then

sc across rem sts at bottom of body, join with sl st to beg sc. Fasten off and

weave in tails.

Eye:

With white, embroider a French knot at head end between Rows 4 & 5.

With purple, work 5 chain st embroidery sts around French knot. Finish off and

weave in tails

Mouth:

With red, embroider 8 ch sts in a “smile” shape from Rows 2-4 below eye. Finish

off and weave in tails.
