Double-Double Crochet Hat by Kathy North

Size: Teen/Adult

Materials:

Approx. 75 yds. ea of 3 colors worsted wt. yarn (light, medium, dark)

Size K hook (or size to achieve gauge)

Yarn needle

Gauge: 10 sts, 5-1/2 rounds = 4” in double crochet on size K hook

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), repeat (rep), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st)

Hat

Rnd 1: Holding 1 strand light color yarn together with 1 strand medium color yarn, ch 4, join into ring (or using magic disappearing loop method), ch 3, work 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, work 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * around, join with sl st (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, dc in each of next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in ea of next 2 dc, rep from * around, join with sl st (48 dc).

Drop light color yarn. Leave 6” tail to weave in later.  Join a second strand of medium color to the medium color yarn that is still attached to the hat.

Rnd 5-7:  Holding 2 strands of medium shade yarn, Ch 3 (counts as first dc).DC in next DC.  DC in each double crochet around.  (48dc)

At end of Rnd 7, drop one medium color yarn. Cut dropped strand, leaving 6” tail to weave in later.  Join a strand of dark color yarn to the medium color yarn that is still attached to the hat.

 Rnds 8-10: Holding 1 strand of medium color yarn and 1 strand of dark color yarn, Ch 3 (counts as first dc).DC in next DC.  DC in each double crochet around.  (48dc). (48dc)

At end of Rnd 10, drop medium color yarn. Cut dropped strand, leaving 6” tail to weave in later.  Join a second strand of dark shade yarn to the dark shade yarn that is still attached to the hat. Work the rest of the hat in 2 strands of dark color yarn.

Rnd 11: Holding 2 strands of dark shade yarn, ch 1. SC in ea dc around (48 sc). Join with sl st, fasten off and weave in tails.

 

Options for making a smaller hat or larger hat:

To make a smaller hat, work to 36 dc (end of rnd 3).  Then, work only 3 rnds of light/medium combination, only 2 rnds all-medium, and only 2 rnds medium/dark combination, for a total of 8 rnds. Complete the hat with a 9th round of all dark yarn single crochets around.

To make a larger hat, work an extra rnd of increases on Rnd 5 as follows:

Ch 3, dc in same st at base of beg ch-3, dc in each of next 3 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in ea of next 3 dc, rep from * around, join with sl st (60 dc). Continue on 60 sts and follow pattern rows 6-11 as above.
