Christmas Holiday Ornaments

An assortment for holiday decorating –

angel, Christmas flower, wreath, tasseled diamond

 

Skill Level: Easy-Intermediate

Size:  2-1/2" to 4" high

Materials:

Note: sample thread ornaments shown in Coats & Clark “Knit-Cro-Sheen” ;

sample yarn ornaments shown in Plymouth Yarns “Encore”

Small amounts of sport or DK-wt. yarn in red, green, white

1 ball size 10 crochet thread in gold with gold metallic accent

1 ball size 10 crochet thread in white with silver metallic accent

One 1" cabone ring (for wreath)

2 small jingle bells, 5 tiny red pompoms, 4 small red faceted beads for trims

Crochet hooks sizes D/3 (3.25 mm), E/4 (3.5 mm), F/5 (3.75 mm)

Tapestry needle

 

Gauge: not critical for this project

Stitches/Terms:  beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), single crochet (sc), triple crochet (trc), stitch (st)

Pattern notes: Angel and tasseled diamond ornaments are worked with 2 strands #10 crochet cotton thread held together as one.  Christmas flower and wreath are worked in single strand of yarn.

 

Angel Ornament

Use double strand white/silver metallic crochet cotton & size E/4 (3.5 mm) hook

 

Head & Wings:

 

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join into ring, work 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg chain (12 dc)

 

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 2 dc, ch 12 (halo), skip 3 dc, sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in next 2 dc, join with sl st (10 sc + ch-12 halo).  Turn and work in rows for remainder of ornament:

 

Row 3: Ch 3, 5 dc in same st, dc in next 10 dc, 6 dc in top of last st (the beginning ch-3), turn (22 dc)

 

Row 4:  Ch 3, (dc, hdc, sc) all in same st as beg ch-3, sc in next 20 dc, (sc, hdc, 2dc) all in top of last st (top of beg ch-3), fasten off (28 sts) (head & wings completed)

 

Skirt:

 

Turn head/wings piece upside down.

 

Row 1: Reattach yarn in 11th sc from tip of wing, ch3, dc in same st, 2 dc in ea of next 6 dc, turn (14 dc)

 

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc, *ch 1, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * across, ending with ch 1, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in top of beg ch-3, turn (14 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

 

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in ea dc and sp across, turn (20 dc)

 

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, *ch 2, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * across to last 3 sts, ch 2, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, dc in top of beg ch-3, turn (20 dc, 9 ch-2 sps)

 

Edging: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, dc in same st, *sc in next sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, rep from * across to last 2 dc, skip next dc, sc in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

 

Finishing: Lightly stiffen angel with diluted glue/water mixture, lay on waxed paper or plastic wrap, shape and let dry completely.   Attach length of gold crochet thread to top of halo for hanger.

 

Christmas Flower Ornament

Use green, red, white yarn & size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook

 

Note:  Make 2 pieces the same for front & back of ornament as follows:

 

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join into ring, work 11 dc in ring, join with sl st, fasten off green (12 dc)

 

Rnd 2: Attach red to top of any dc, ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st, fasten off red (24 dc)

 

Edging:  Hold front and back pieces of ornament with wrong sides together, then work through the inner loop of each piece and attach edging as follows:

 

Attach white to top of any dc, inserting hook through both layers to join front piece to back piece.  Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, dc in same st, *sc in next st, ch 3, dc in same st, rep from * around, join with sl st, fasten off white.  Weave in loose ends. 

 

Finishing: Attach length of gold crochet thread for hanger.  Attach small jingle bell to center of flower on each side, if desired.

 

Wreath Ornament

Use green yarn/gold crochet cotton held together & size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook

 

Rnd 1: Insert hook into cabone ring, yo and pull loop through ring, ch 1, sc evenly around ring until covered (about 20 sc), join with sl st (20 sc)

 

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 4 dc in same sc, drop loop from hook, reinsert hook in top of beg ch-3 and through top 2 loops of last dc worked, yo and pull loop through to form popcorn st, ch 1 to fasten top of popcorn, ch 1, skip 1 sc, *popcorn in next sc, ch 1, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg popcorn (10 popcorns, or 1/2 the number of sc made on Rnd 1)

 

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in top of same popcorn, sc in next ch-1 sp between popcorns, ch 3, dc in same sp, *sc in top of next pc, ch 3, dc in same pc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, rep from * around, join with sl st, fasten off.  Attach gold thread hanger. Glue on tiny red pompoms at random to represent berries.

 

Diamond Tasseled Ornament

Use double strand gold/gold metallic and white/silver metallic size 10 crochet cotton thread & size D/3 (3.25 mm) hook

 

Rnd 1:  With double strand gold/gold metallic crochet cotton, ch 8, join into ring.  Holding back last loop on hook as you form 3-dc clusters, ch 3, 2 dc in ring (beg cluster made), ch 3, *3-dc cluster in ring, ch 3, rep from * six times, join with sl st to top of beg cluster (eight 3-dc clusters, eight ch-3 sps)

 

Rnd 2: Sl st to first ch-3 sp, ch 1, 3 sc in ea sp and 1 sc in top of ea 3-dc cluster around, join with sl st, fasten off gold (32 sc)

 

Rnd 3: Join white/silver metallic double strand in any sc directly above center of 3-dc cluster, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, *(2dc, ch2, 2 dc) in next sc (corner made), hdc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, hdc in next sc, rep from * around, ending sc in last 2 sc, join with sl st, fasten off white/silver (four corners made with 5 sc between ea corner).

 

Rnd 4: Join gold/gold metallic double strand in center sc on any side, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in ea sc to first corner, *sc in corner, ch 6, sc in 3rd ch from hook (picot made), ch 4, sc in same corner, sc across to next corner, rep from * around, ending with sc to beg of round, join with sl st, fasten off and weave in ends.  Attach gold thread hanger to one corner picot loop.

 

Tassel & Finishing:

 

Holding 2 strands gold/gold metallic tog with 2 strands white/silver metallic, wind thread around 4" length of cardboard 5 times.  With a separate double strand of thread, tie one end of wrapped strands tog at top, leaving long ends to attach tassel to ornament.  Cut lower end of tassel strands, remove cardboard.  At 1/2 " from top of tassel, wrap separate length of thread several times around to form head of tassel, tie off and bury ends inside tassel strands. Trim strands evenly at bottom end of tassel.  Tie tassel to corner picot loop at bottom of ornament. 

 

Lightly stiffen ornament with diluted glue/water mixture (as on angel), lay flat on waxed paper, pull points into shape, let dry completely.  Glue on 4 small red faceted beads to each corner of diamond as shown in photo.
