CHENILLE CARPETBAG (crochet)

Finished size:
Approx. 16* wide at bottom, 12* wide at top x 11* deep
Materials:
300 yds. sport-wt. chenille (sample shown in a coned yarn called
“Pasa”, a sport-wt. multicolor chenille)
Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge
Tapestry needle
Wooden purse handles with 12* slit opening (for insertion of crochet
piece)
18” x 24” piece of fabric for purse lining
Gauge:
4 sts = 1” in double crochet on size H/8 (5 mm) hook
Stitches/Terms:
back loop only (BLO), beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet
(dc), half double crochet (hdc), place marker (pm), repeat (rep),
single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st)
Pattern notes:
Bag is worked sideways, then ends are inserted through slit in purse
handles and sewn down.
Work every row in BACK LOOP ONLY (BLO).
Removable stitch markers help identify single, half double and
double crochet sections. Move them up as you work.
Bag
Row 1: Ch 101, sc in second ch from hook and next 19 ch, place
removable stitch marker (pm), hdc in next 20 ch, pm, dc in next 20
ch, pm, hdc in next 20 ch, pm, sc in last 20 ch.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in BACK LOOP ONLY (BLO) across 20 sc, hdc in
BLO across 20 hdc, dc in BLO across 20 dc, hdc in BLO across 20 hdc,
sc in BLO across last 20 sc.
Repeat Row 2 until width of bag at sc ends measures same length as
purse handle slit opening. Fasten off.
Finishing:
Fold crocheted piece in half, matching beginning ch row to final row
(ribs will run vertically), attach yarn at side and slip st side
seams together, leaving sc portion unsewn. Insert sc portion
through purse handle, fold over and sew securely on inside of bag.
Cut piece of fabric to size of crocheted piece, then sew sides in a
¼” to ½” seam. Insert lining into bag, fold down top edge for hem,
then tack to inside of bag all around top of lining.
