©2007 Designs by KN; distributed by piece-by-piece.net Designed by Kathy North Size: Approx. 14” circumference, 5-1/2” high Materials: 1 ball bright blue Lion Brand “Cotton-Ease” yarn (50% cotton/50% acrylic) – or similar DK-wt. yarn 3 yds. white sport-wt. cotton 1 yd. ea. black & pink sport-weight cotton Size H & F hooks – or sizes to achieve gauge Tapestry needle Gauge: 7 hdc = 2“, 5 rows = 2” in hdc with size H hook IMPORTANT NOTE: The yarn used for this hat is machine washable/dryable. Eyes/ears/mouth are hand-crocheted for baby’s safety (do NOT use glue-on eyes or other adornments that could be a choking hazard.) Make sure all pieces are sewn on securely. Stitches/Terms: back post half double crochet (bphdc), beginning (beg), chain (ch), front post half double crochet (fphdc), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), together (tog)
Hat (worked in rounds) Rnd 1: With size H hook, make beginning ring (either ch 4, join into ring, or use magic disappearing loop method), ch 2, work 9 hdc into ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2 (10 hdc) Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st (at base of ch), 2hdc in ea hdc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch (20 hdc) Rnd 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st (at base of ch), 1 hdc in next hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch (30 hdc) Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st (at base of ch), 1 hdc in ea of next 2 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 2 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch (40 hdc) Rnd 5: Ch 2, hdc in same st (at base of ch), 1 hdc in ea of next 3 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 3 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch (50 hdc) Rnds 6-11: Continue to work even in hdc on 50 sts. Begin hdc rib: Rnd 12: Ch 2, *fphdc in next hdc, bphdc in next hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch (50 hdc) Rnds 13-14: Ch 2, *fphdc in fphdc, bphdc in bphdc, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch (50 hdc) Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc loosely in ea hdc around, join with sl st (50 sc). Fasten off and weave in ends. Ears (make 2) Row 1: With blue, ch 5, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, ch 2, turn (3 hdc) Row 2: Hdc in ea hdc, ch 2, turn. Row 3: Hdc 3 tog. Fasten off, leaving 8” tail for sewing. Turn piece on its side and sew securely to top of hat over Rnds 3-5 to form ear shape. Weave in ends Eyes (make 2) Rnd 1: With size F hook and black sport-wt., make beg ring, work 6 sc in ring, join with sl st, fasten off. Rnd 2: Join white sport-wt. to any sc, ch 1, work 2 sc in same sc, work 2 hdc in next sc, work 2 dc in next 3 sc, work 2 hdc in next sc, work 2 sc in last sc, join with sl st. Fasten off, leaving 12” tail for sewing. Place eyes on hat in desired location and sew securely to hat. Weave in ends. Nose/Mouth (make 1) Leaving 12” length of yarn for sewing, with size F hook and pink sport-wt., chain 25, leave a 12” length of yarn for sewing, cut yarn, fasten off. Fold chain in half. Insert hook between 2 sts/2 rows in center of face between eyes, pull center portion of ch through, then pull ends of ch through loop on hook, tighten (the bump formed by this loop becomes the nose). Arrange rest of chain in mouth shape (as shown in photo), then use tail ends of yarn to backstitch through each ch to secure it to hat. Weave in tails.
